Hello all,
I'm a computer repair specialist who is totally CLUELESS when it comes to bags and EDC in general. After an increasing number of service requests for apple computers I decided to switch from a 15.4 inch Dell laptop to a MacBook Pro 13 to better serve some of my clients (don't worry Windows fans, I WILL be dual booting Windows 7 on the macbook in a few days). Now my problem is that the MacBook is too small for my current laptop bag and I think I could do much better. I have browsed around some sites like maxpedition and so forth but haven't really fallen in love with anything yet.

So here are the essential things I absolutely have to carry on a daily basis (apart from a standard computer repair toolkit I have which I do no intend on integrating):

Heres a detailed list of the items in the picture starting top left and going right:

1. External USB Hard Drive
2. MacBook Charger (cables are as tightly wrapped as I can get them)
3. Phone Charger
4. Flash USB Drive
5. Desktop RAM
6. Below the Ram is a SATA/IDE to USB hard drive adapter (I keep it in the box because its got a lot of messy wiring to it)
7. MacBook (about 9" x 13" x 1")
8 and 9. Booklet and Sleeves with various software discs and blank media

Thats it for the essentials but after seeing some of the bags my cousin has (You might know him as "iamsalomon" on EDCforums) I'd like the flexibility to carry a few extra items. For example, I have seen some bags that have a separate concealed firearm compartment which I think is genius and would love to have on my bag. I currently carry a Kel Tec P11 9mm with one extra clip. I have also seen bags that offer a side mounted water bottle holder which I would like to have on mine.

Aside from that, there are some rare instances where I might have to take a modem or router or another random piece of hardware about the size of the cd booklet or so.

Iamsalomon also recommended that I go with a bag made of ballistic nylon and get YKK zippers for maximum durability. Water resistance is definitely a plus.

Here is what my current bag looks like (please try not to laugh):

I put the external Hard Drive, MacBook charger, Sata/IDE to USB adapter and Disk booklet in the Middle area because it is the biggest:

Here is the front part:

And I usually put the Desktop Ram and loose CD Sleeves in the frontmost compartment:

Look at how small the Macbook is in the bag:

There you have it, nothing too fancy, just a standard leather Dell bag. I would like to thank anyone who might offer some suggestions in advanced. Also if anyone needs any help coming up with ways to do more computing work with less equipment for EDC purposes, feel free to hit me up and I'll be more than happy to work on something with you.

With my impressions about Kifaru largely formed from the responses I received to an earlier post (What about Kifaru?) I decided to follow up with purchasing a Koala for concealed carry. On the Kifaru net site they warn of a several week wait time because their product is hand made. I called them to see if that was true and found out that they did have a Koala in stock and I was able to order and have it delivered second day air. Voila' it was here. The person I talked to (Janice) was incredibly helpful and based on my experience I feel that Kifaru takes customer service very, very seriously.

When it arrived I literally examine the Koala seam by seam and stitch by stitch. It is extremely, extremely well built. Even as a loyal Maxpedition customer I think the Koala is better built than any of my Maxpedition stuff. It is truly impressive.

I attached a Maxpedition Monkey Admin pouch (see pic) which suits my purposes and makes a great thing even better.

I have carried the bag EDC for about two weeks now and am extremely pleased with it. Thumbs up for Kifaru and the Koala.

Did something that I don't usually do last night. Impulse buy!

I was surfing the 'bay and saw an Eagle Ind. Becker Patrol pack come up with only one bid sitting at $90. So, I threw in a bid at the end and got it for $91 (plus an atrocious $18 shipping, but oh well).

My quick amount of research yielded that this was a pretty good deal even if it is woodland camo, of which I'm not a huge fan.

Anyway, what's the consensus on here of this bag. Yeah, nay, just ok???

Thanks.

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for a small messenger type bag to carry my netbook and edc kit on the inside, with a pocket on the outside to carry my 1qt steel nalgene bottle. A full size messenger bag will carry it all, but I am looking for something to keep my water bottle separate from my electronics and everything on the inside nice and organized. I have the standard bug out bag from LA Police Gear with the dual bottle holders as my work bag, and have a mini messenger bag just big enough to hold my netbook (asus w/ 9 inch screen), but I need something between these two for weekend/ casual carry, (can't have too many bags).

I know the maxped jumbo versipack type bags will fit, but I need something that doesn't stick out from the body that much and is less tactical looking. A plain replaceable shoulder strap also would also give me more carry options (right side, left side, back).

Thanks,

I've added an iPad to my EDC, which is causing me some distress. I'm using it a lot at work so I'm carrying it everyday. I have been using a large Patagonia messenger bag for my EDC, but really it's too big. I often left it in the truck. I've got a Swiss Army messenger bag that really isn't big enough for anything (it was a gift). I've got a Booq BOA backpack, but it's too large and I usually only use it when traveling for work. I've also tried by MaxPed Monsoon Gearslinger, but it's cumbersome to get the iPad in and out of.

I'm a professional and I want something that looks the part. I've decided I want a messenger type bag as I'm big and broad shouldered so backpacks can be uncomfortable (with the exception of my Red Ox rucksack I travel with). I want to stay away from the tactical look. What I've been looking at is the Saddleback briefcase and satchels. I just can't get a feel for their size. I'd like to see some pics with people carrying them. I also don't want to get something I make look too small and purse like. I'm also open to alternatives.
