EDCForums strives to provide a friendly, collaborative community for people from around the world to share their knowledge, use, and interest in everyday carry (EDC). Like any forum, we have rules and guidelines, designed to promote a positive member experience and keep the forum running smoothly. Participating as a registered member constitutes agreement to abide by these policies. 1. The Golden Rule Treat others as you wish to be treated, with mutual respect. It’s okay to disagree, but don’t be “disagreeable.” Don’t antagonize, resort to insults, personal attacks, or bigotry. Avoid terms intended to ridicule, demean, or mock e.g. sheep or similar. We are a global community — our members come from scores of countries, representing diverse cultures, beliefs and backgrounds. Xenophobic behavior has no place on EDCF.Don’t bait, troll or flame. 2. Language and Content Foul, obscene or overtly suggestive language or content is not acceptable; nor is language that is sexist, racist, bigoted or homophobic. If you wouldn’t say it to your mother, grandmother, clergyman, or a kindergarten class, don’t say it here. These restrictions also apply to: photos, graphics, videos, linked content, acronyms or abbreviations, or creative use of symbols, which, if spelled out, would contain the same prohibited language. Threads/posts that are political or religious in nature are not permitted. 3. Private Communications Members may not post any content from private communications between individuals, e.g. emails or messages on forum’s private messaging system (PC/private conversation).4. Multiple Member Accounts Only one member account per person is permitted. If you have issues with your account (i.e. forgotten password, user name-change), do not create another account. Use the password recovery routine (link) or message a staff member for help (link to names).5. Illegal or Criminal Activities EDCForums is about preparedness, safety, and the legal and lawful everyday carry of tools and gear by responsible citizens (which might include guns or knives). Encouraging, advocating, or discussing violence or illegal acts is strictly prohibited.6. Weapons-Related Dual-Purpose Items Defined as an item that can function as both a tool and a weapon (i.e. a pen purposely designed by the maker to also function as a weapon).Discussions are prohibited that attempt to obfuscate an item’s primary use as a weapon in an effort to circumvent applicable laws. The determinant: What is the primary function and intended use?7. Unofficial Clubs or Guilds No special clubs or guilds are allowed at EDCForums — such groups are sometimes perceived as exclusionary. The forum is a place where everyone will be welcome, regardless of his or her experience, level of expertise, type or quantity of EDC-related items owned or carried, or level of forum participation.8. Giveaways and Contests These events are a part of what makes EDCF fun. Our members have proved to be very generous in their support of contests and giveaways, and we hope to have many more in the future. If you would like to organize and sponsor such an event, please message (PC) an administrator (link) to coordinate before you announce. The reasons: we maintain a queue of members waiting to conduct a giveaway; through trial-and-error, we’ve established a standard process that assures best execution, which helps to avoid results that might reflect negatively on the forum. Once your giveaway is active, forum staff will do all they can to help promote.9. Offers to Buy/Sell/Trade Posting an offer or feeler to buy, sell or trade in a sub-forum other than the Buy/Sell/Trade sub-forum(s) is prohibited. Note that members must have a post-count of fifteen (15) or greater before they can view the B/S/T sub-forum(s). Rules specific to B/S/T participation can be seen here (link). 10. Hotlinked Images Posting hotlinked images/photos is not permitted (linking to images hosted on someone else’s website, social media pages, blog, server etc). See Hotlinking Images and Why You Shouldn’t (link) for more information. Go here (link) for help using the many free image-hosting sites.11. Posting Links and Link-Blocker As detailed elsewhere in these policies, posting of external links may be restricted. The forum does not wish to be a portal for — or drive traffic to — other websites, particularly commercial sites. However, certain approved websites have been “white-listed” and those URLs may be posted. Submit new white-list requests by message to forum staff.Generally, non-commercial sites may be white-listed. Among those currently white-listed are image hosting sites (e.g. Flickr, Photobucket, Imgur etc), YouTube and news sites. To help curtail external linking, link-blocking software is employed. Attempting to bypass the software is prohibited, e.g. use of short URLs, BBcode, images, watermarks or creative formatting. Posts attempting to circumvent will be edited or removed. Open-forum discussion of link-blocker software, the policy, or related staff action is prohibited. Message a staff member if you want to discuss or ask questions. For more information, please view this thread: Domain Not Approved - LinkBlocker Software.12. Conflicting Commercial Interests Companies or individuals engaged in commerce may not have a business or product presence on the forum without the forum owner’s consent and agreement. This restriction extends to manufacturers, retailers, suppliers and small-entrepreneur makers of gear or other products. Also restricted: websites, blogs, review sites, video-based channels (i.e. YouTube), and social media that are “monetized” in some way (e.g. host advertising, sell products, or participate in “affiliate programs”); also, crowd-funding principals (i.e. KickStarter, Indiegogo projects), and web-based group-buying participants (i.e. MassDrop). Spamming or shilling by such entities, their representative — or any forum member — is prohibited, and such content will be edited or removed. Businesses or individuals who want to explore a business presence on the forum should first contact the designated forum staff member(s) by private conversation/PC or email (link). Please note that EDCForums does not offer paid-advertising. For related policy, please see Rule 13. Content of a Marketing Nature. 13. Content of a Marketing Nature Threads and posts of a marketing nature are prohibited. a. Members may not post content that markets, advertises or promotes a business or product(s); this restriction includes photos, videos, URLs (web addresses), avatar images/text/logos, and publicly displayed email addresses that are clearly business-related.b. Member’s user-name may not identify a business or product (except members that are forum-store suppliers);c. Posts promoting or linking to crowd-funded projects (i.e. Kickstarter, Indiegogo), or web-based group buying (i.e. MassDrop) are not permitted;d. Links to blogs, websites, social media or video-based channels (i.e. YouTube) that are “monetized” (e.g. host advertising, sell products, or participate in “affiliate programs”) are prohibited.14. Deal Spotting is prohibited. Defined as posting an external source or seller of a product, with or without price, URL/web address or promo code. It’s a form of passive advertising for the posted source, and is unfair to the enterprises that support EDCForums by supplying product(s) to the forum store. This policy is in no way intended to curtail or discourage organic member-discussion of gear or products.15. Product Reviews by Members Members who maintain a product review site may not post external links to their written reviews; however, we encourage and welcome direct posts of wholly independent, non-commercial written reviews in their entirety.Video reviews that meet the following criteria may be posted: must reside on a video-hosting site, e.g. YouTube and Vimeo. Both the video channel and the reviews must be commerce-free, independent, non-commercial, non-sponsored and non-compensated, as defined within this rule.An independent review is one where the reviewer purchases the reviewed product, has no connection with the product seller, and the review is not otherwise sponsored or compensated — in other words, an arms-length review. Please observe Rule 14. Deal Spotting when posting reviews. Sponsored or compensated reviews are not permitted. Defined as a review where reviewer receives any form of compensation from the product supplier, seller or manufacturer.“Compensation” could be monetary payment, paid advertising agreement, affiliate-sales agreement, or where the reviewed product was provided by product seller or manufacturer — whether temporarily or permanently — to facilitate the review. If you’re unsure whether or not your review complies, or have questions, please message a staff member before posting. (Staff list). Federal Trade Commision (FTC)- Mandated Disclosures and Product Reviews The FTC requires proper disclosure for non-independent reviews; but it may be that no disclosure is required for wholly independent reviews (the only kind EDCF allows). This FTC publication, The FTC's Endorsement Guides (rev 2013) provides guidance. Good starting point: pg. 4, When Does the FTC Act Apply to Endorsements? Over-disclosure is always better than under-disclosure. Reviewers have sole responsibility for determining whether or not a disclosure is required. 16. Staff Action The staff monitors forum activity, and takes appropriate action when policy violations occur. Depending on the violation, a member might simply be cautioned and reminded of the applicable rule; or a post might be edited, locked or removed. In some circumstances, where a pattern of infractions exists, a member’s account-privileges might be temporarily suspended. In rare, extreme cases, a member’s user-account could be permanently revoked (aka banned). It is impossible to include every conceivable example of inappropriate member behavior in these rules. Consequently, forum staff may moderate threads or posts based on content or behavior that, in their judgment, doesn't comply with the spirit of these policies. Such staff decisions and actions will have the same force and effect as the written rules. If any member has questions or concerns about a staff decision or action, they should address by messaging (private conversation/PC) a staff member, and not discuss, debate or question in the open-forum. Doing so is disruptive and itself a rule violation. We encourage members to help maintain the forum’s integrity by using the “Report” function when inappropriate content or rule violations are seen. These rules and policies are a "living document;" that is, subject to change and revision. For more information, please view this thread: Domain Not Approved - LinkBlocker Software. We appreciate your conscientious adherence to EDCF's community policies. It helps the forum remain member-, family- and workplace-friendly and an enjoyable place to interact with fellow gear-nuts!
